Abstract

The 2015 general election in Nigeria took place in an atmosphere of fear and of possible mixed outcomes. However, fears that Elections would be marred by serious violence were allayed to a large extent, some instances of technical hitches, vote buying and other forms of electoral malpractices were recorded in some parts of the country.  These electoral hitches were not sufficient to alter the outcomes of the elections. For the first time in Nigeria’s political history, an incumbent president lost power in a general election. The issue is whether this can lead to democratic consolidation in Nigeria’s democracy.  The concern of this paper is to examine the nature of the 2015 elections and the possibility of democratic consolidation relying on both qualitative and quantitative methods of research. The paper concludes that much has to be done if Nigeria’s democracy is to attain the so much desired democratic consolidation.
