THE NEW POLITICAL CLIMATE IN NIGERIA: CHANGE OR STATUS QUO?

Abstract

The government that came to power after the 2015 election in Nigeria promised “change†This was to address the malaise that it met on ground. However, the socio economic conditions have continued to worsen in the form of high level corruption, kidnapping, armed robbery, youth unemployment and now the scourge of unpaid salaries in most states of the federation. This paper critically examined the political climate and interrogated the ‘change’ mantra as promised by the government of the day whether it has actually brought change or merely maintaining status quo. The paper utilising secondary sources of data, found out that rather than change the government has succeeded in maintaining status quo because the change mantra was a mere campaign slogan or propaganda. The work recommended the need for citizens to rise and ask for patriotic leadership, good governance, zero tolerance to corruption and general value re-orientation of citizens
