Abstract

The study examines the influence of top management team characteristics on performance. The study is guided by the upper echelons theory. A descriptive cross-sectional survey design was adopted. The population of the study comprised all tea factory companies in Kenya. Primary data were collected using structured questionnaire targeting factory unit manager, production manager, finance manager and field services manager. Data were analysed through descriptive and regression analysis. Results obtained support the hypothesis that top management team characteristics influence performance. It was concluded that top management team characteristics largely influence performance of the firm. The results offer evidence that guides management of top management selection and development to improve performance. One of the main draw backs of the study is its inability to test causality. The study recommends the use of longitudinal research design to examine causal relationships between top management characteristics and organizational performance.
