Abstract

Present study has been undertaken to find out contraceptive potential of crude and ethanolic extracts of Calotropis gigantea Linn. in albino rats. 150 and 300 mg/kg body weight doses were selected and were administered for 14 days duration. Androgenic/antiandrogenic efficacy of the extracts was tested following Dorfman (1969) method. Wet weights of androgen dependent organs viz. seminal vesicles, ventral prostrate and levator anii muscle was measured and compared with control. Findings indicate antiandrogenic nature of the extracts. It causes reno-hepatic toxicity. The antiandrogenic nature of the extracts might be attributed to its toxic degenerative effect on Leydig cells. There may also be the breakdown of pituitary–testis axis as the count of Leydig cells decreases considerably. If toxicity is alleviated then this plant might be a good source for male contraceptive preparation.
