Abstract

Gastric retention along with controlled drug delivery is advantageous to many drugs
having low absorption window and hence poor bioavailability. For that various gastro
retentive approaches are available like floating, bioadhesion, swelling, etc. all the
approaches having their own advantages and disadvantages. For minimizing the
limitations and achieving better gastric retention various combinational approaches
floating and swelling, floating and bioadhesion, etc., multiparticulate systems, super
porous hydrogel, etc have been discussed. It is known that differences in gastric
physiology, factors such as, gastric pH, and motility exhibit both intra as well as intersubject
variability demonstrating significant impact on gastric retention time and
drug delivery behavior. In this paper current and recent gastroretentive approaches
have been presented.
