Abstract

In the India of today, women’s careers have assumed an unprecedented significance. From putting the hard earned education of women to good use to supplementing the family income in the age of sky rocketing commodity prices, Indian society has acknowledged the need for its women to work. Given this context, Indian corporates have been successful in leveraging the rich talent pool constituted by educated and talented Indian women. This has resulted in more number of women pursuing careers across industries, but primarily at the entry level. As a woman pedals ahead in the cycle of life and assumes the role of a wife and eventually that of a mother, domestic responsibilities demand more of her time and focus. To help her balance her professional and personal commitments fairly and to avoid a career break in the process, it is important that employers recognize the role of work flexibility in sustaining her career.
The study documented in this paper investigates the relevance Indian Women Professionals (IWP) attach to various dimensions of Flexible working arrangements (FWAs) and bring into perspective the role FWAs play in keeping alive the careers of the IWP’s. The results of the study show that any flavor of work flexibility is successful in reducing the stress levels of women trying to strike the right balance between work life and personal life. In addition to enhancing the organizational loyalty of the women employees, flexible arrangements are also able to increase the longevity of women’s careers with many beneficiaries ultimately reaching leadership positions in their respective organizations. Organizations on their part are benefitted by a gender diverse and inclusive workplace that with its dynamic nature brings the world closer to the vision of gender equality.
