This is a descriptive cross-sectional study that was carried out at Khartoum State
during the school year 20112/2012 to estimate the prevalence of obesity among school
children aged 6-15 years and to investigate the relationship between BMI (Body Mass
Index) and socioeconomic status and life style factors. Two hundred and fifty pupils
participated in this study. The researcher took the anthropometric measurement inside
the class room and gave the questionnaire the students to be answered by one of child’s
parents. The data was analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences
(SPSS Version 13.0).
In this study, prevalence of obesity was found to be (48%) of them 18% males and 30%
females. Income of the family, number of high caloric carbonated beverages/week, way
of transportation to school, length of daily playing outside the home, and time spent
in watching TV and video games were significantly correlated with student’s BMI.
While parent’s BMI was not having significant correlation with student’s BMI.
This study is considered as the first study in its field regarding this age category in
Khartoum State, and it is promoting future researches in obesity and its determinant.

Infants and toddlers are vulnerable to the effects of anemia due to rapid growth
and development of brain and rest of the body from birth to age three. Preterm
and/or low birth weight infants are more vulnerable. Iron-deficiency anemia
affects neurological development due to reduced myelination of the spinal cord,
as well as a change in myelin composition. To correlate complete serum iron, TIBC and serum ferritin of new born of ?32weeks(wks),
33-36weeks, 37-40weeks and >40weeks gestation age from umbilical cord blood
for early detection of anemia and perinatal managem eonf t complications.
Ninty six new born cord blood was collected of gestation age ? 32wks(10),
33-36wks(12), 37-40wks(60), >40wks(14). Comparison of complete blood count
parameters with respect to gestation age was done in a tertiary care hospital,
Kolkata by ANOVA(one way analysis of variance) test with Graphpad Instat 3
software.
We found significant correlation coefficient for hematocrit(p=0.024), mean
corpuscular volume(p=.0049), platelet count(p=0.0097), red cell distribution
width(p=0.033),serum iron(p=0.0034),serumTIBC(p=0.0482). Anemia is often
first shown by complete blood count (CBC). Sufficiently low hemoglobin
(HGB) by definition makes the diagnosis of anemia, and low hematocrit
(HCT) value is also characteristic of anemia. Biochemical tests usually
done are serum ferritin, serum iron level, total iron binding capacity (TIBC).
Currently, there is no clear recommendation of iron supplementation to the
new born with decreased iron content other than exclusive breast feeding
which is compulsory to all new born. As it is an easy, early and non-invasive
procedure of estimation of fetal iron deficiency, it may be
recommended in health care programmes for early detection and treatment of
iron deficiency before the development of actual anemia.

This study is to investigate the effectiveness of an exercise program for children from
10 to 11 years old. In this study, 30 subjects were divided into two groups of equal
control and training. After completing the procedure, the participants in the training
group performed the gymnastics training program for 12 weeks and the control
group did nothing. Data collection tool is a demographic questionnaire and a scale of
self-concept Piers-Harris. Kolmogorov-Smirnov test is used to test the normal distribution
of samples. The research results show that in the training group, the size of
the concept of self and the general self concept of children before and after exercise
instrument increased significantly. The results also show that the size of happiness
and satisfaction of children, both in the control group and in the training group, is
significantly different. The study, concluded that a training program in the field of
gymnastics training has significantly increased the level of self-concept of children.

Introduction : As the number of drugs taken by geriatric patients and the incidence of ADR is high in this age group, it becomes increasingly essential to study patterns of drug use. This study aimed to analyze the medication utilization patterns using WHO core prescribing indicators.

Methods: Cross Sectional  & Analytical study using WHO core indicators and Beer’s criteria as an assessment tool for potentially inappropriate medication for older adults.The top 10 drugs were classified according to WHO-ATC (Anatomical Therapeutic Code) Classification system with DDD (Defined Daily Dose) 

Results: A total of 200 Geriatric patients were taken in the study. . The average number of drugs per encounter was 7.16. Drugs acting on the cardiovascular system were the most commonly prescribed. Ranitidine was the most commonly prescribed drug. The study shows the present prescribing practices in the hospital related to higher polypharmacy and inappropriate medication use.

Conclusion: To enhance drug therapy for geriatric patients, it is essential for prescribers to make aware of the Beers criteria and should be surely followed for good health care outcomes in the elderly. A systematic medication chart review by the clinical pharmacist can minimize the frequency of prescribing drugs without indications and thereby decrease polypharmacy.
