The placentas of 100 mothers with Intrauterine Growth Retardation(IUGR) were compared to Placentas collected from 100 mothers who had uncomplicated pregnancies.This study demonstrated that,Placentas with Low weight and surface area is associated with IUGR babies . The findings of this study support the hypothesis that,in IUGR some alterations in  blood flow and possibly umbilical blood flows causes   changes in placental structure and function and reduction in placental weight and surface area.
